Heyford Bowls Club – November 2019

NetherHeyfordBowlsClub

Indoor
Wednesday bowling sessions are going very well with good turnouts. The ‘BENCO SHIELD’ was played on the 19th October and will be reported on later.

Our next eagerly awaited competition is the ‘LADIES v MEN’ on Saturday 9th November with a 1 pm start. No doubt this will be very keenly fought. This will be the end of our competitions till the spring, so let’s have some really good turnouts.

We are entering the WARDINGTON league again through the winter months that was very much enjoyed by our bowlers. It gave us the opportunity to meet and make friends with bowlers from the south of the county. It was a charity league and over £800 was raised and presented to four worthy charities. It was our first year in the league and we finished a very respectful runner up. It looks like being a very busy and enjoyable winter season for ‘HEYFORD INDOOR BOWLERS’.

Our first match is at home to MORETON PINKNEY on Monday 4th November with a 7.30pm starting time. Our second game is away against WOODFORD HALSE and BODDINGTON on Wednesday 13th November with a 2.30pm start. These will be two hard games to start the season.

Heyford Bowls Club – October 2019

NetherHeyfordBowlsClub

Indoor

During the summer months when attendances are known to drop with holidays etc, dark nights and winter months now approaching, it will be time to relax and enjoy our Wednesday bowling sessions. These sessions can be very enjoyable and we welcome anybody who would like to come and give it a try. Bowling is in the village hall and times are afternoons 1.50pm and evenings 7.15pm every Wednesday.

It looks like we will be entering the WARDINGTON winter league again this year. Last year’s matches were very enjoyable and in our first season we finished runners up.

Four teams contested The Men’s Pairs on Saturday 14th September. Bowling Club competitions as always produce some very fine bowling. These are hard fought matches as teams strive to reach the final. The winners were Morris Freeman and
Graham Drake over Geoff Groom and Barry Clements.

Don’t forget the BENCO SHIELD on Saturday 19th October at 1 pm.

Well I’m afraid we were relegated from Division Two of the Northamptonshire Area Triples League. Requiring a 6-0 win in our final match, we won 5-1 and were relegated by the cruel margin of half of a point. Obviously, our aim is to bounce back next season.

All the club competitions have been completed. The winners and runners up were:

And that’s the end of the outdoor season. We put the green to bed on Sunday 6th October. Our AGM is on Tuesday 29th October and our Presentation Night is on Saturday 23rd November.

Archaeologist Dr Den Does It Again – October 2019

The installation of the Basketball/Netball Courts at Heyford Playing Fields was
brought a stage nearer over the weekend of 7/8 September by the efforts of local
Archaeologist Dr Dennis Taylor.

As part of Nether Heyford Playing Fields Association’s (NHPFA) aspirations, the
construction of the new courts was planned on the recently purchased land adjacent to the existing playing fields. The project was estimated to cost £30,000 by Sports Courts UK. Funding has been obtained by a grant of £20,000 from the London Marathon Charitable Trust and a £10,000 Capital grant from South Northants Council. Planning permission has been requested, however the County Assistant Archaeologist applied for a condition to be placed on the application. This meant that an archaeology investigation needed to be undertaken to identify the age and character of crop marks which showed on aerial photographs held in the County Archives.

The cost of this investigation had to be borne by the Planning Applicant. NHPFA
had no funding for this, consequently the whole project was in jeopardy of being
cancelled. The only solution was for the investigation to be undertaken, at no cost, by volunteers. When approached, Dr Den Taylor of South View Nether Heyford, despite being retired, agreed to supervise the investigation. Mr Daryl Welsh of Flore offered to loan and operate his digger for a weekend and Mr Dan Musson of Bugbrooke also offered plant assistance. A further crew of 6 able bodied volunteers was formed and the investigation was organised and carried out 7/8 September.

The County Assistant Archaeologist Liz Mordue and Cllr David Harries visited the
site on the Sunday morning and Dr Taylor showed them the excavations. After
discussions, Liz Mordue agreed that the particular area was of no further
archaeology interest and that the County Environment Records could be updated
accordingly.

This was the second time that Dr Den Taylor had come to the assistance of NHPFA,
as he carried out a similar investigation in 2012 to enable the Bowls Club to build their changing rooms.

Dr Den is an interesting village character. After leaving university with a degree in archaeology, he joined the RAF as a navigator. He flew in De Havilland Mosquito and Super Sabre planes with the 58th Squadron and is now one of two surviving members of his time in the Squadron; he says ‘it makes reunions easier!’. With 14 years service, he left the RAF as a Squadron Leader and worked at several jobs, including being a bricklayer.

On retirement, Dr Taylor returned to Archaeology and after several projects earned his doctorate. He has 4 children who paid for him to pass his Pilots Licence as a 86th Birthday present. Dr Taylor is now a very spritely 92 and serves on the Village Hall Committee.

Thanks again Dr Den, the Basketball/Netball Courts project is now back on track.

Heyford Bowls Club – September 2019

NetherHeyfordBowlsClub

Indoor

In spite of summer holidays and other commitments, members support for Wednesday short mat bowling sessions has been very good. The friendly Friday evening outdoor triples league has now finished and was enjoyed by all who took part. The indoor short mat league will commence during the winter months. More information on this when it becomes available.

The Men’s Pairs will be played on Saturday 14th September. This produces some very keen competition, therefore it would be nice to have as many names down as possible. There will be two more competitions this year and they will be announced later.

Anyone wishing to play indoor bowling will be made most welcome at our Wednesday bowling sessions. Times for these are – afternoon 1.40pm and evening 7.10pm.

At the time of writing these notes, Heyford Bowls Club are in grave danger of being relegated from Division 2 of the Northamptonshire Area Monday Night League. With two games to play, two good wins are needed, but our consistent inconsistency has been our downfall.

On the friendly games front the results have been much better; 16 wins out of 26 games with one tied. The season is rapidly drawing to an end, with only the final of the club competitions on Saturday 31 August and Sunday 1st September, and the Gala Day on Sunday 15th September scheduled to be played on our green.

Oh! And of course our final league game on Monday 9th September against Abington.

Defibrillators – July 2019

I have now changed the defibrillator cabinet codes. THEY ARE NOW BOTH THE SAME. The reason for doing this is so that even if you go to the wrong one with the code the ambulance service have issued you with, you will still be able to unlock it and gain access to the defibrillator.

If you have been sent to fetch a defibrillator, the call handler will issue you with a code to access the cabinet that is showing as nearest to you and they will always advise the address of that defibrillator.

In Nether Heyford there are two locations.

1 – on the side wall of the One Stop shop
2 – at the playing fields, in the bowls club car park.

I would strongly advise everyone to familiarise yourself with these locations.

I understand that it is sometimes easier to go to the shop instead of the playing fields, especially if the gates are locked but it is important that you let either myself or someone on the Parish Council know ASAP that you have done this, especially if you were advised to go to the other location.

When you are given a code to access the cabinet, that defibrillator is taken off the system. If you were asked to go to the playing fields but decided the shop would be quicker and easier, whilst that is OK now, you will potentially have the wrong one removed from the system and the next person to call 999 might be sent to an empty cabinet.

If you are unfortunate enough to need to use the defibrillators, please inform either me or the Parish Council ASAP so we can get the defibrillator back in service straight away. The pads will need changing and the battery checked before it can go live again.

Heyford Bowls Club – June 2019

Indoor

On the 28th April saw a good turnout for the Mixed Bowls Singles Championship, to be decided by a knock-out system of games each consisting of seven ends. An excellent series of games developed with the women coming out on top. The final turned out to be an outstanding game with some great bowling and a score of 4-4 going into the last end. It was finally won by Rosemary Haddon over Jean Culling by the score of 6-4. The Norman and Viv Browne Trophy for the highest score in one match was won by Sandy Davies with a magnificent score of 18. This is our last competition until September so time to enjoy the friendly summer games.

The ‘WARDINGTON LEAGUE’ has now ended with Nether Heyford indoor bowls team finishing a very respectable second. We were presented with a cup for runners up at the end of the season closing competition at Moreton Pinkney. £800 was raised for charity over the season’s games and distributed between four worthy charities.

Heyford Bowls Club – May 2019

Indoor

The ‘LADIES PAIRS’ Competition was played on 23rd March and saw six teams contesting for the trophy. After a number of elimination games of six ends, the two highest scorers would then proceed to the final. This produced an excellent standard of bowling, which was maintained throughout the competition. The final was won by JEAN CULLIN and PAULINE THACKRAY over ROSEMARY DUNKLEY and PAULINE GROOM, by the score of 11 to 3.

Our last competition until September, ‘THE MIXED PAIRS’ will have been played on the 27th April, which will be reported on in the next issue. A very entertaining fixture, the OUTDOOR v INDOOR has unfortunately had to be postponed until a later date.

The ‘WARDINGTON LEAGUE’ matches are now finished and were enjoyed by all
who took part.

Outdoor

We have to admit that our green is not looking as pristine as we would like it. A combination of winter weather conditions and an unexplained reason why our seed did not germinate as usual has led to some bare patches. However, we are hoping the warmer weather will improve the situation.

Our home matches in May are:

Saturday 4th Northampton BBOB 2:30 pm

Sunday 12th Kingsthorpe 2:30 pm

Monday 20th Roade 6:30 pm

Thursday 23rd Daventry Town 6:30 pm

Saturday 25th Internal Drawn Triples 2 pm

On Sunday 26th we will be holding an Open Day from 10:00 am until 4:00 pm, when
anyone, any age, can come along and try bowls. All you need are a pair of flat
soled shoes (although we can supply these as well). Everything else we provide.
Give it a go; we’ll be pleased to see you.

Heyford Bowls Club – April 2019

Indoor

Our last match in the Wardington League was played on the 6th February at
Boddington. It proved to be a hard fought game. Heyford lost the match with a loss on one mat and a draw on the other.

Our next club competition, the MIXED SINGLES, will be played on Saturday 27th
April, start time 1.30pm. This will be very highly contested, so names down please in the usual way.

Our annual fixture, the outdoor v the indoor, which seems to come round very
quickly, will be played on the outdoor green on Saturday 20th April, start at 2pm. This game of course will depend on green condition and weather.

Thanks to all our members, good support is being maintained at our Wednesday
bowling sessions.

April sees the start of the outdoor bowls season. At the time of writing we don’t know when the green will be open. That will be decided at the next committee meeting on 2nd April. What we do know is that the first home game will be against the club’s short mat section on Saturday 20th April, the same day as the Quiz Night in the Village Hall at 7.00pm. A week later our first game against another club is at Cogenhoe.

Also, on the social front our Fish and Chip supper night is on Saturday 6th April in the Village Hall.

More next month on our Open Day on Sunday 26th May. In the meantime, if you want to find out more about Heyford Bowls Club, give me a call. I won’t bite.

Heyford Bowls Club – March 2019

The DAVE JULAND PRESIDENT’S CUP competition took place on Saturday 9th
February with six teams of players participating. The early rounds consisted of two matches each; the two highest scoring teams then proceeding into the final. After a very entertaining afternoon the seven end final proved to be a hard fought encounter. The eventual winners were Rosemary Dunkley, Bernard Alder and Morris Freeman over Chris Phillips, Rosemary Haddon and Den Taylor by the close score of 6-5.

Our last match in the Wardington League was played on Monday 4th February.
Heyford’s two teams of bowlers were in excellent form and recorded a very high
scoring win on both mats. This was one of our best wins, producing maximum points. With five wins out of six we are now sitting very handy in the league.

Indoor bowls competitions are again in the pipeline with the LADIES PAIRS on
Saturday 23rd March. Entrants names as usual on the notice board. This is a well
supported event so ladies please let us have as many bowlers as possible.

Members support is very strong maintaining very good attendances for both our
Wednesday bowling sessions. New members are settling in very well and enjoying
their bowling.
